For owners in seasonal cruising grounds, how a yacht is laid up at the end of the season has a direct effect on how much time and money relaunching it takes in spring. A rushed lay-up is one of the most common sources of avoidable maintenance bills the following year.

Engines and running gear

Fresh oil and filters before lay-up, rather than after, prevent contaminants from sitting in the engine over months of inactivity. Fuel systems benefit from a stabilizer treatment and full tanks, which reduce condensation and limit the growth of the microbial contamination often called diesel bug. Raw water systems should be flushed and, in cold climates, properly winterized to prevent freeze damage to pumps, coolers and hoses.

Systems and interior

Batteries need either a maintained trickle charge or periodic manual charging through the off-season, since a fully discharged battery bank rarely recovers its original capacity. Air conditioning and water systems should be drained or treated according to the manufacturer’s guidance, and interiors benefit from good ventilation and moisture control to prevent mildew over a closed-up winter.

Exterior and hull

A hull cleaned and inspected before haul-out, rather than after months of marine growth, makes it far easier to spot early signs of osmosis, coating wear or damage to running gear. Covering teak, canvas and exposed upholstery reduces UV and weather damage over the season, and is considerably cheaper than replacement in spring.

None of this is complicated, but it is easy to skip under time pressure at the end of a busy season. A written lay-up checklist, followed consistently every year, is the simplest way to protect a yacht’s value and keep spring relaunch costs predictable rather than a surprise.

Choosing the right yacht is ultimately about matching the vessel to how you actually intend to use it — and once that choice is clear, the next priority is execution. Timing matters, and at IST Yacht & Jet we know how to source, negotiate, and deliver the right yacht faster than the market standard, cutting through the usual delays and intermediaries.
