Below a certain size, most owners run their own yacht: a well-equipped 12 or 15 metre motor yacht is well within reach of a competent owner-operator with the right training. Above roughly 24 metres, and certainly at superyacht scale, a professional crew stops being a luxury and becomes close to a practical necessity, both for safe operation and to meet flag state requirements.
What a full-time crew actually does
A permanent crew covers far more than driving the yacht. On a larger vessel that typically means a captain responsible for safety and compliance, engineers maintaining increasingly complex systems, and interior crew managing service, housekeeping and provisioning. The benefit is a yacht that is always ready to leave the dock, maintained to a consistent standard, and available at short notice. The cost is a year-round payroll, whether the yacht is used for two weeks or twelve.
Freelance and seasonal crew
For owners who use their yacht heavily for a few months a year and want it laid up the rest of the time, freelance or seasonal crew can be a more efficient model than a permanent complement. The trade-off is continuity: a fresh crew each season needs time to learn a yacht’s particular systems and quirks, and scheduling experienced freelance crew during peak season can be competitive.
Third-party yacht management
Many owners, particularly those new to a larger yacht or based far from where it is kept, use a management company to handle crew recruitment and payroll, maintenance scheduling, regulatory compliance and insurance renewals. This adds a management fee on top of running costs, but removes a significant administrative burden, and a good management company brings buying power on parts, insurance and berthing that an individual owner rarely has on their own.
There is no single right answer here. The decision usually comes down to how much time you have to be involved personally, how often the yacht is actually used, and whether your priority is minimizing cost or minimizing the time you spend managing it.
Choosing the right yacht is ultimately about matching the vessel to how you actually intend to use it — and once that choice is clear, the next priority is execution. Timing matters, and at IST Yacht & Jet we know how to source, negotiate, and deliver the right yacht faster than the market standard, cutting through the usual delays and intermediaries.
